An online recommendation is useful only if your group can run the same game, afford its access model, and agree on the kind of session. This edited shortlist selects six concrete options from the original July 2025 article. Publisher access pages and store records were checked on October 7, 2026; this is not a server-uptime test or a claim of personal multiplayer experience.

“Group size” below means the selected mode’s team or your friend group, not everyone in a matchmaking server. Modes rotate, and an individual playlist can have different limits.
| Game | Group format to plan around | Platform or edition constraint | Access cost | Time commitment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| League of Legends | Two teams of five in standard Summoner’s Rift; matchmade teammates can fill your team | Desktop PC/Mac game; Wild Rift is a separate mobile game | Free-to-play, optional purchases | Learn a role and champions; leave time to finish a match |
| Fortnite Battle Royale / Zero Build | Solo, duo, or squad choices; squads normally mean up to four friends | Supported PC/console/mobile platforms vary; check Epic’s current device list | These modes are free-to-play; optional purchases | Match-based; good for a few rounds, not a pause-anytime game |
| PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS | Solo, duo, and four-person squad formats where available | PC and supported consoles; PUBG Mobile is a separate product | Base game free-to-play; optional purchases and paid upgrades | Looting and movement can precede a brief, decisive fight |
| Apex Legends | Standard battle-royale trios; other playlists can differ | PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch 2; confirm current hardware support | Free-to-play, optional purchases | Team communication and learning movement are long-term skills |
| Minecraft | Flexible shared worlds; limits depend on host, server, or Realm | Match Bedrock with Bedrock or Java with Java and compatible versions | Paid game; optional Realm hosting and some console online subscriptions | A project can span weeks, but you can agree on small session goals |
| World of Warcraft | Persistent world, with different limits for parties, dungeons, and raids | PC/Mac; coordinate game version, region, and realm | Trial to level 20; subscription/game time beyond that, with current expansion access checked separately | Character progression and organized group activities favor regular sessions |
League of Legends: choose it for roles and team strategy
The standard goal is to destroy the enemy Nexus. Lanes, turrets, the jungle, champion abilities, and equipment decisions mean that aiming alone is not enough. It suits a group willing to learn how its roles interact and to accept that an individual game is a shared commitment.
Before inviting newcomers, agree whether you are learning together or expecting competitive performance. A tutorial and beginner practice are more sensible starting points than promising that a new player will immediately understand ranked play. Riot’s official rules and starting guide.
Fortnite: distinguish building from no-building play
Battle Royale and Zero Build do not ask for the same skill set. If rapid structure-building is the part that keeps your group away, Zero Build removes that requirement while keeping weapons, items, positioning, and survival.
This makes it a useful starting choice for friends who want the battle-royale format but disagree about learning building controls. It remains competitive, not a guaranteed relaxed co-op session. Check the party limit of the actual mode selected rather than assuming every creator island uses the battle-royale rules. Epic’s Zero Build explanation.
PUBG: choose it for deliberate survival decisions
Where you land, what equipment you find, and how you move into the shrinking safe zone are central decisions. It fits players who enjoy periods of searching and positioning followed by dangerous firefights.
It is a weaker fit if your group wants constant action or hates being eliminated after a long setup. The publisher also lists Team Deathmatch and changing Arcade options, so inspect those before abandoning the game based on one battle-royale session. The PC listing is not evidence that PUBG Mobile shares its matchmaking or purchases. Official PC store page.
Apex Legends: choose it for a coordinated small squad
Legend abilities add distinct tactical responsibilities to a fast-moving hero shooter. It is a stronger fit for friends interested in positioning and communicating than for someone who wants a purely solitary shooting challenge.
Treat its movement and abilities as skills to learn, not evidence that onboarding is effortless. At this revision EA’s supported cross-play list includes Switch 2; do not extend that to the original Switch without a current official confirmation. Official PC page and EA cross-play platform instructions.
Minecraft: choose it for a world you make together
A shared build, exploration trip, or survival base gives the group its own objective rather than requiring a win over strangers. It is the clearest choice here if one friend wants to build while another likes gathering or exploring.
Setup is the main practical obstacle. Agree on Java or Bedrock, make sure versions match, and decide who hosts. Mojang’s guide explains Bedrock invitations, Java server addresses, LAN play, and Realms. A Realm is an optional hosting service, not a mandatory purchase for every multiplayer arrangement. Set a concrete first-session target—such as a shared shelter—rather than treating the world’s lack of a fixed ending as a plan. Official multiplayer setup guide.
World of Warcraft: choose it for recurring group progression
The appeal is developing a character in a persistent fantasy world and eventually taking on group activities. It is the most natural fit for people who want a recurring social game rather than a few unrelated matches.
The free trial is not unrestricted free access: Blizzard distinguishes characters up to level 20 from play requiring subscription or game time. Agree on version and region before creating characters, and inspect trial restrictions before assuming every social feature is available. Raid schedules should not be the default expectation for friends who can only appear irregularly. Blizzard’s trial and access explanation.
A practical decision for tonight
- Want to create rather than compete? Minecraft, after matching editions and hosting.
- Want free battle royale without construction? Fortnite Zero Build.
- Have three players keen on coordinated abilities? Apex Legends.
- Want slower positioning and equipment decisions? PUBG.
- Want to learn fixed team roles over time? League of Legends.
- Want a persistent character and a regular social routine? World of Warcraft, with its access costs understood.
