FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is Square Enix’s attempt to answer a very specific question: what would happen if the classic Final Fantasy formula kept pushing pixel art forward? Its answer is a new single-player RPG that combines crystals, airships, espers, familiar heroes, and a modern HD-2D presentation without abandoning turn-based command battles.

Why It Stands Out

The visual identity is the immediate hook. Square Enix describes FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE as the first Final Fantasy game to join the HD-2D lineup, using pixel-based characters, dynamic camera work, and pixelized 3D models to make the world feel both nostalgic and newly cinematic.

The game is not only a visual exercise. Its story follows a journey to protect crystals and stop Veritas of the Dark from destroying the world, while the larger concept draws on the first story arc of FINAL FANTASY Brave Exvius and rebuilds it as a full console-quality RPG.

Gameplay

  • Timeline-driven turn-based combat. The battle timeline shows upcoming actions for allies and enemies, making turn order part of every serious decision.
  • Stagger as the main opening. Breaking an enemy’s stagger gauge can stop its next action, lower its defense, and create room for stronger attacks.
  • Visions as a modern job-system layer. Visions provide abilities that can be learned and combined, letting players build synergies instead of locking every character into one permanent role.
  • Legacy heroes and Resonances. Visions of classic Final Fantasy characters can join the system, while Resonances provide powerful Vision-specific moves after a successful stagger sequence.
  • Espers and classic exploration. Story progress and side quests unlock espers, while chocobos, airships, crystals, a Colosseum, and other Final Fantasy landmarks give the adventure a familiar shape.

Current Release State

FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is scheduled to launch on October 22, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store. Square Enix’s regional announcement notes that Steam release timing may appear as October 23 depending on the region.

A free demo is available on PlayStation 5 and Steam. It covers the entire first chapter, and demo save data carries over to the full game. The PlayStation demo announcement also confirms that Sephiroth appears as a challengeable legacy character with a special reward.

Who Should Play It

Play FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE if you want a new Final Fantasy adventure with a classic RPG structure, expressive pixel art, and enough party-building depth to make each ability choice matter. It is especially promising for players who like turn-based combat that rewards reading the timeline rather than simply selecting the strongest attack.

Skip it if you want real-time action, co-op, or a game that is already fully released. The pre-release demo gives a useful look at the opening chapter, but the full campaign and its long-term balance are still ahead of launch.
